Macao faces manpower shortage as gaming industry blooms
HONG KONG, Jan. 17 Kyodo
The expansion of gambling and resort tourism in Macao is leading to a mounting labor shortage, Macao Social Affairs and Culture Secretary Chui Sai-on said Wednesday.
According to government statistics, Macao has a labor force of 285,000 and the latest jobless rate was 3.6 percent, dropping from 6.8 percent in 2000.
Local businesses have been complaining about the labor shortage as many job seekers are being recruited by the increasing number of new casinos built by foreign investors.
''The tourism industry has been growing steadily, however, we are aware of the challenges ahead, including shortage of human resources, particularly mid-level management and technical personnel,'' Chui said.
But he declined to elaborate on the seriousness of labor shortage ahead of the release of a government-commissioned study that he said is due next month.
